Crews have made headway in the fight against the city’s largest blaze, but resurgent winds could pose a fresh danger.

It is expected to take some time to determine the death toll from this week's Los Angeles firestorms. Officials confirmed 10 people died in the Eaton and Palisades fires, but Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna said that number is likely to rise.

“This is a tragic time in our history,” said Los Angeles County Police Department Sheriff Jim McDonnell during a press briefing on Wednesday. “These are…unprecedented conditions, but also unpredictable as the fire continues to spread and pop up in different locations, none of us know where the next one is going to be.”

Firefighters scrambled on Saturday to contain multiple fires in the Los Angeles area, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds. The Palisades fire, the latest of the blazes, had grown to more than 23,000 acres and threatened the Brentwood neighborhood.
