Saturday’s experience for the Univ. of Wisconsin’s men’s and women’s hockey in the Frozen Confines at Wrigley Field -- which involved playing top-level competition in the outfield in one of the most storied stadiums in baseball -- will go down as one beyond the wildest dream every Badgers player and coach ever had.
After neither team found the net during the three-on-three overtime period, Ohio State eventually ended the game in a seven-round shootout. Nonetheless, the final score moved Wisconsin to an impressive 20-1-1, 14-1-1 WCHA on the season and concluded the Badgers’ season series against the Buckeyes (13-5-3, 8-5-3 WCHA).
With the win, Michigan State snapped Wisconsin’s perfect outdoor record, handing the Badgers their first loss in four outdoor games. The Spartans improve to 2-3-1 outdoors, famously having tied their rival Michigan Wolverines in the 2001 “Cold War” game at Spartan Stadium that kicked off the outdoor ice hockey phenomenon.
