The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to reverse a lower court order that has blocked mass firings and major reorganizations at federal agencies, a case that could have enormous consequences on President Donald Trump’s ability to reshape the federal government.

Solicitor General D. John Sauer urged the justices to intervene quickly, arguing that Illston overstepped her judicial authority.

The 7-2 ruling extends the court’s April emergency order barring Trump from using the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport migrants held in a Texas detention facility, after lawyers said the detainees were being put on buses towards an airport without a chance to challenge the decision via habeas corpus petitions.
