A TikTok ban might be one step closer to reality even if there are still some lingering doubts about whether a federal law will really go into effect on January 19.

The Supreme Court seemed likely to uphold a new law that could force TikTok to shut down in the U.S., with conservative and liberal justices alike expressing skepticism about the legal challenge.

On Friday, TikTok argued its case before the Supreme Court. Justices appeared skeptical of the platform’s First Amendment challenge to the law requiring it to shut down or find new owners by Jan. 19.
