Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been sworn in to serve a third term despite plentiful credible evidence that his opponent won the election.

Yesterday, opposition leader María Corina Machado posted a video on social media saying the moment was not right for his return. Recorded in hiding, she promised: “Edmundo will come to Venezuela to be sworn in as constitutional president of Venezuela at the right time.”

President Nicolás Maduro will extend his increasingly repressive rule over Venezuela until 2031 when he is sworn in on Friday, despite credible evidence that his opponent won the latest election and following protests against his plan to serve a third six-year term.

Maduro has ramped up his crackdown on the opposition, which international observers believe comfortably beat him in last year’s election.

On the same day Nicolás Maduro was sworn in to serve a six-year term as the president of Venezuela, the U.S. announced a $25 million reward for his arrest. The reward is part of a program aimed at "disrupting and dismantling transnational drug trafficking organizations."

The United States will also extend temporary protections for roughly 600,000 Venezuelan migrants in the United States.
