PowerSchool, a popular online portal used by many New York school districts to manage student registration, grading, attendance and more, was hit by a data breach in December that saw the unauthorized release of some student information.

The Juneau School District notified staff and families that the district was unaffected by a national cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool on Friday — however, on Tuesday, JSD confirmed it was indeed impacted.

PowerSchool, a software provider popular at K-12 schools, was the target of a data breach in late December that affected many districts in the U.S. and in other countries, according to the company and several impacted schools.

The data breach was announced last week by PowerSchool, a student information system used by more than 70% of school districts across the country and serving more than 60 million students and teachers.

Council Bluffs Community Schools confirmed that their district was hit by a cyber security attack. A new university proposed by the Chinese billionaire founder of Fuyao Glass Industry Group, the company featured in the Oscar-winning 2019 documentary American Factory,

The districts are customers of PowerSchool, a cloud-based software company, which says it experienced a cybersecurity incident on Dec. 28.
